Musically Yours!!

Philosophy

It seems that the ever changing worlds of music and technology are continuously intertwined, for without the integration of technologies, the creation of music could not be made possible.  The learning of music is also made possible, and easier as a result of technology.  While observing students with exceptionalities recently, it was interesting to be a part of their daily routine, which was an aspect that I found quite interesting.  Although these children were “isolated” with their own specific routines and schedules, they were still provided the opportunity to join other students in their grade in specials, such as music, physical education, computer lab time, and library time.  In these environments, the majority seemed unable to properly focus.  However, in such situations, they were never neglected instruction.  For example, in music class, although these children had to be removed from classroom instruction and placed with a “private” teacher, it was not as if they were neglected musical instruction.  In an attempt to aid in the focus and attention spans of these students, they were placed at a computer terminal in which interactive muscially based websites were attainable.  It was amazing to see the transformation that took place!  These children were able to walk themselves through lessons in tempo, rhythm, pitch, harmony, and symbols, as well as play a tune and composer their own small composition.  So, even though they were not in the “traditional” classroom setting, they were still able to participate and learn concepts that they would have learned, had they been able to stay in class.  In my opinion, for this particular group of learners, I believe they may have benefited more from this interactive website anyhow, for it was not only fun for them, but it combined engaging color schemes, wonderful sounds, delightful icons, moving icons, and much more to grab, and maintain their attention!  For these very reasons, I believe that it is important to incorporate technology into the classroom, not only because it is fact that students learn more when lessons are fun, but because when used in a creatively effective way, we are preparing them for their futures!

Among the multitude of technologies available for use in the music classroom, some “essentials” include Finale, a notation software that makes composing and arranging simple and easy; SmartMusic, an interactive program that provides students with the ability to practice with complete accompaniment; Wii, a wonderful way to teach the basics of music, such as notation, note values, pitch relationships, and rhythms; and of course, clickers, Smartboard, handheld devices, internet, projectors, and CD’s/DVD’s are a wonderful way to get students involved.

I believe that learning should be an engaging, interactive, and fun experience.  Technology can help us, as teachers, achieve that sentiment.
